A web page can imitate a system warning, use flashing colors or play an alarm sound. A dramatic message in a browser is not proof that your device is infected.
Notice the warning signs
Be cautious of countdowns, threats that your files will be deleted, claims that a support agent is already connected, or demands to call a number shown in a pop-up. Unexpected requests for remote access or payment are especially concerning.
Close the page without interacting
Do not click buttons inside the alert. Close the browser tab or use the browser menu to exit. If it will not respond, use Task Manager to close the browser and reopen it without restoring the previous session.
Check notifications and extensions
Some sites abuse browser notification permission to send alarming messages. Review site permissions and remove permission for unfamiliar sites. Remove extensions you do not recognize, and keep only those you actively use.
Run a trusted scan if needed
Open the security app already installed on your device through its normal Start menu shortcut and run an update or scan. Download security software only from its verified publisher or an authorized store.
